STARCAST REACTION TO FILM

Prachee Shah Paandya who essays Choti Tabassum and Prateik Babbar’s reel mom states, “My character is that of a mother, whose misguided son has wronged the nation, and the family. But certain relations are by birth. You cannot change them. Whether it’s motherhood or your citizenship. Playing a Muslim character for the first time and living with the actors as part of a Muslim family has broadened my perspective of life . It was a great learning experience working with a fantastic cast and an ace director like Anubhav Sinha.”

Neena Gupta who essays Badi Tabassum and Rishi Kapoor’s reel wife states,”Mushkil ki ghadi mein apne pariwar kojitna surakshit aur shant rakh sakun yehi mera role hai mera dharam hai.”

Manoj Pahwa who essays the accused, Bilaal Mohammed states, “ I normally opt for easy going comic characters but Mulk is the first time I am trying my hand at something more serious and meaningful. I have never played a victim in a film so it was quite challenging.”

Ashutosh Rana who essays the public prosecutor, Santosh Anand states, “मेरी नहीं श्री अनुभव सिन्हा के लिए चुनौती थी। उस चुनौती को उन्होंने ऑल्रेडी इतने अच्छे से उठा लिया था कि हमारे लिए उसको सिर्फ़ काग़ज़ से उठाकर पर्दे पर रखना था। अनुभव मुल्क के मिस्त्री हैं और हम मुल्क के मज़दूर।“

Prateik Babbar who essays the misguided youth, Shahid Mohammed states, “I have always wanted to essay the role of an anti-national . Playing grey comes easy to me but I had to learn a lot of new things to portray terrorism in the right light.”

Rajat Kapoor who essays the investigating officer, Danish Javed states, ‘Danish Javed is interesting because of the context that is provided by the overall story- and not on its own. His conflict is one part of the larger thrust of the film. Infact Anubhav Sinha had called me to play Bilal- he had seen my picture, while I was in the get up for Pari-very short hair and long beard, and Anubhav thought that look might be good for Bilal. I met him, read the script.. and my request to him was that I’d like to play Javed. Javed is different from what I have done so far- and a bit of action made it even more interesting for me.”

TRAILER

Present day. India. A good Muslim family in Varanasi is accused of colluding with the planning of a terrorist attack in the city. The neighbourhood is polarised. People take sides as the court proceedings begin. Defending the family is the Hindu daughter in law. Not all charges are baseless and then a lot boils down to interpretation. A lot boils down to the conditioning of our minds as a society specially when the investigation throws open a lot of surprises.

Anubhav Sinha states, “Essentially Mulk is a courtroom drama, a story of a family that must protect its pride. The film tries to table questions that we don’t address in the open.

We like to call it a social thriller. It is not political. It is a story of you and me, about us. Our conduct. Our prejudices. Our preconceived notions- about each other. We don’t talk to each other about the problems we have with each other. But I guess everything in life is political. The film doesn’t claim to give answers but it is not impossible to find some in there. It is a story of our times. It does not try to teach you anything, it just tells you an engaging story about the people of India.”

Taapsee Pannu Took Inspiration From Amitabh Bachchan For Mulk

Taking over the reins from Pink’s co-star Amitabh Bachchan to essay her lawyer act in the courtroom drama, Mulk, Taapsee Pannu has also replicated the veteran’s gestures to play her part convincingly. Bachchan became Pannu’s reference point for her role, which sees her seeking justice for a client she believes is being framed owing to his religion. She admired Bachchan’s demeanour and voice modulation the most.

Taapsee Pannu who plays Aarti Mohammed in Mulk states, “On celluloid, Bachchan sir’s character in Pink, his portrayal of a stern and convincing lawyer was the best point of reference for me. Since I have worked with him in the film, I have learned how he executed the role. While we are diverse as actors, and the situation my character is in, is different, there were nuances that I picked up from watching him personally. Sir’s sternness is something I observed closely. He could build the aura that the character needed.”

Anubhav Sinha adds, “Taapsee has this unassuming aura around herself. She was entrenched into her character from the day I narrated the script to her. I definitely do see a lot of resemblances between her and Mr. Bachchan on sets in regards to commitment to the role.”

Presented by Kamal Mukut and Soham Rockstar Entertainment, a Benaras Media Works production, the film is produced by Deepak Mukut and Anubhav Sinha and directed by Anubhav Sinha. The film features Rishi Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu,  Neena Gupta, Rajat Kapoor,  Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra,  Ashutosh Rana, Prachee Shah Paandya, Vartika Singh, Ashrut Jain, Indraneil Sengupta.

Taapsee Pannu – Rishi Kapoor Starrer Mulk Inspired By 26/11

We recently got apprised that Anubhav Sinha-directed Mulk is inspired by several true life events but  the tragic 226/11 event in specific, bringing a new twist to the intense courtroom drama.

A source close to the production states, “While the entire film is based on different events that highlight the socio-political perceptions plaguing the nation, Anubhav Sinha wanted to bring about a mass awareness that mobilises the foot soldiers of change. A lot of inspiration was taken from 26/11, Hindu Muslim riots, Babri Masjid, for the narrative to give a new perspective on the Hindu-Muslim conflict and showcase a resolution. India is the 4th worst country when it comes to religious violence and while the constitution allows for religious freedom it’s rarely practiced and that aspect was something that Anubhav Sinha wanted to portray.”

As clearly seen in the teaser Prateik has been made to resemble Kasab, Rishi Kapoor’s one dialogue highlights Osama Bin Laden while Taapsee Pannu represents a balance of two worlds(Hindu woman married to a Muslim man) and Rajat Kapoor is caught up in an identity crisis as a Muslim investigating into a Hindu-Muslim case.

Presented by Kamal Mukut and Soham Rockstar Entertainment, a Benaras Media Works production, the film is produced by Deepak Mukut and Anubhav Sinha and directed by Anubhav Sinha. The film features Rishi Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu,  Neena Gupta, Rajat Kapoor,  Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra,  Ashutosh Rana, Prachee Shah Paandya, Vartika Singh, Ashrut Jain, Indraneil Sengupta.

Taapsee Pannu Turns Choreographer For Mulk

Lead protagonist of the Anubhav Sinha’s courtroom drama, Mulk – Taapsee Pannu will not just be lending her acting prowess to the much awaited multi-starrer film but has also tapped into her multi-tasking aptitude by donning the role of a choreographer for the very first time. The intense film features a peppy song  “Thenge Se” mid-way into the film highlighting festivities in the Mohammed household which was jointly directed by Anubhav Sinha and Taapsee Pannu

Anubhav Sinha states, “Since Mulk doesn’t have the quintessential Bollywood song and dance facet , my focus was never to rope in a mainstream choreographer for the two songs in the film. While I decided to single handedly direct both the songs, Taapsee expressed her interest in lending a helping hand. Since the song was not meant to look like a professionally choreographed song I wanted a fresh perspective and Taapsee did wonders. I am quite impressed with her directorial eye and someday if she ever wishes to foray into direction she will do well for herself. “

Presented by Kamal Mukut and Soham Rockstar Entertainment, a Benaras Media Works production, the film is produced by Deepak Mukut and Anubhav Sinha and directed by Anubhav Sinha. The film features Rishi Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu,  Neena Gupta, Rajat Kapoor,  Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra,  Ashutosh Rana, Prachee Shah Paandya, Vartika Singh, Ashrut Jain, Indraneil Sengupta.

Prateik Babbar Researched On David Headley For Mulk

The starcast of the Anubhav Sinha’s courtroom drama, Mulk – Taapsee Pannu, Rishi Kapoor, RPrateik Babbar and Ashutosh Rana underwent intense lessons before they got into the thick of their character for the film.

While Prateik Babbar read up extensively on American terrorist of Pakistani origin,  David Headley and watched Among The Believers documentary on Netflix for his role as the misguided youth, a religious Muslim scholar was called in specially from Malihabad to oversee Rishi Kapoor’s  scenes involving Muslim rituals. Ashutosh Rana and Taapsee Pannu who play public prosecutor and defence lawyer respectively were trained by retired high court judge Nadeem Siddiqi from Lucknow for their courtroom scenes to ensure the legal system was aptly represented.

Anubhav Sinha states, “I wanted my starcast to be thoroughly prepared for the film and dive deep into their characters. Every actor invested close to 3 months in preparation for their respective roles. There was a lot of research undertaken since the film is inspired by true life events. I was quite impressed with every actor’s contribution to their on screen portrayal since a lot of them didn’t need any retakes because they were well researched.  Ideally a film of this nature takes a minimum of 2 months but we managed to finish shooting the entire film in a span of 29 days in a place like Lucknow which was commendable.”

Upon quizzing Sinha on the starcast preparation he said “We wanted a lot of realism involved in the film. So yes we hired the services of professionals like a judicial expert, a religious practioner, a law and order representative and the likes. Prateik did a lot of reading up and in particular the David Headley episode as I wanted him to be in the thick of the character.”

Presented by Kamal Mukut and Soham Rockstar Entertainment, a Benaras Media Works production, the film is produced by Deepak Mukut and Anubhav Sinha and directed by Anubhav Sinha. The film features Rishi Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu,  Neena Gupta, Rajat Kapoor,  Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra,  Ashutosh Rana, Prachee Shah Paandya, Vartika Singh, Ashrut Jain, Indraneil Sengupta.

Anubhav Sinha Intimidated Rishi Kapoor On The Sets Of Mulk

Lead protagonist of the Anubhav Sinha’s courtroom drama, Mulk – Rishi Kapoor faced an uncomfortable encounter on the sets of Mulk when Sinha introduced not one but an unconventional set-up involving 6 cameras.

Anubhav Sinha states, “Rishi Kapoor did a commendable job with getting used to the 6 camera set-up which he has never experimented with previously. It took him a day to get used to it since he is used to focusing on a single camera set-up on most of his films. I wanted a candid feel for the courtroom scenes hence I decided we will shoot with six cameras and shoot long takes. This did make Rishiji very uncomfortable as he is used to performing for a single camera or two. But this discomfort dramatically disappeared within a day and then he was volleying to all the six effortlessly like he had never shot with a single camera before”.

Presented by Kamal Mukut and Soham Rockstar Entertainment, a Benaras Media Works production, the film is produced by Deepak Mukut and Anubhav Sinha and directed by Anubhav Sinha. The film features Rishi Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu,  Neena Gupta, Rajat Kapoor,  Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra,  Ashutosh Rana, Prachee Shah Paandya, Vartika Singh, Ashrut Jain, Indraneil Sengupta.

Bollywood actor Taapsee Pannu, who will soon be seen essaying the role of hockey player Sandeep Singh’s love interest in his upcoming biopic Soorma was training on her hockey skills way before she began her training with the former Indian captain to perfect her act  for the movie. The pretty lass carried along a hockey stick to Lucknow and was seen practicing every second day at her hotel whilst shooting for Anubhav Sinha’s courtroom drama, Mulk.

Sagar Shirgaonkar of Benaras Media Works states, “Taapsee was one of the most conscientious actors on the sets. She spent a lot of time rehearsing her narrative post pack-up and somehow managed to also practice for Soorma whilst shooting for Mulk.”

Rishi Kapoor Delivered Most Important Scene Of Mulk With 104 Fever

While lead protagonist Rishi Kapoor abstained from alcohol and lauded his ‘discipline’ during the shoot of Anubhav Sinha’s  courtroom drama, Mulk, he suffered from a heavy bout of viral flu during the  shoot.  While his personal doctor was unable to fly down to Lucknow, Sinha ensured he got the best medical treatment since he was prepping for the most crucial bomb blast scene of Mulk.

Anubhav Sinha states, “Rishiji is such a through professional on sets. He never took a day off even though the entire crew insisted on flying him back to Mumbai during his illness. Infact since the blast scene involved special effects and since his reports weren’t too favourable we suggested using a body double which he never agreed to. Infact he used to sit patiently for 5 hours everyday for his make-up.”

Mulk Starcast Rishi Kapoor, Taapsee Pannu, Prateik Babbar Praise Lucknow

The cast and crew of director and producer Anubhav Sinha’s next Mulk is in awe of Uttar Pradesh. The shooting for the social thriller produced by Deepak Mukut  and co-produced by Mustaq Shiekh is already half way through and the starcast has indulged in everything local – from shopping for chikan embroidery to awadhi cuisine , the starcast is gushing over the city and its hospitality. Last night the entire cast and crew cut a massive cake with the common man of Lucknow to celebrate their spirit of hospitality.

Anubhav Sinha states, ” There were instances where after every shot I got tea served by the local vendor without even asking for it. We set up a temple and a Hindu celebration scene in a Muslim locality and it was seamless.”

Rishi Kapoor states, ” There was a time when we used to shy away from doing any promotions in UP because we were apprehensive of the crowd mentality. We were always under the impression that the crowd will be unruly and I was wrong. It is so ironical that we are shooting Mulk in the absolute underbelly of Lucknow and the people have been tremendously co-operative ensuring the shoot goes on seamlessly. This kind of co-operation gave me such a reality check and I am very happy that Anubhav decided to shoot here and change our perceptions. We have literally shot in downtrodden lanes and shanties but the common man here is so helpful and accommodating, much to my utter surprise.”

Taapsee Pannu states, “It’s the first time I am shooting in Lucknow and I was pleasantly surprised to see the hospitality of people. Such a warm welcome and everyday locals used to serve us home cooked food. Infact their help for our shoot is something we cant thank them enough for. They have been our pillar of strength while shooting some intense outdoor sequences. ”

Prateik Babbar states, “Lucknow for me has always been a beautiful city. Lucknow gave me the best memory of celebrating my late mother’s birthday on sets. The people here are not just respectful and friendly, but they are fabulous human beings. It’s what I call a home away from home. I never felt like I was shooting for an outstation shoot.”

Manoj Pahwa states, “Mehman nawazi is the religion here. Love and help is the intention and food is the hathiyar.  I love shooting in this city.”

Neena Gupta states, “Inspite of all the crowd and commotion and traffic , I must say we had complete peace whilst shooting. This only happens in Lucknow.”

Prateik Babbar Celebrates Smita Patil’s Birthday On Mulk Sets

Actor-politician Raj Babbar’s wife and Prateik’s mother, Smita passed away at the age of 31 but her memories still live on. Just two weeks after giving birth to her first child, Smita died because of childbirth complications on December 13, 1986. Even after 31 years of her demise, Smita is still remembered for her matchless contribution to cinema.

The actress was possibly the first feminist actress on the Indian screen. In a career spanning just over a decade, Patil is unparalleled in the films she did and the roles she breathed life into. Immensely talented and intense, the women she portrayed on celluloid were as real as they were feisty. Ushering in her birthday celebrations every year is a annual ritual for her son who is busy shooting for social thriller Mulk, produced by Deepak Mukut and directed and written by Anubhav Sinha, in Lucknow.

Anubhav Sinha of Benaras Mediaworks who aims to complete the film shooting by November this year states, “ Filmmakers who got an opportunity have always maintained that no actress can match her finesse in acting and I admit, I am a big Smita Patil fan. No discussion of meaningful Indian cinema is possible without her. It will be a special day on sets.”

Prateik Babbar who joins Rishi Kapoor and Taapsee Pannu on sets adds, “We are going to be cutting a 10 kg cake on set for the 170 people. I have always wanted to celebrate her birthday on a filmset as that was a place that breathed life to her passion and who she really was. I will also be bringing in red roses and white lilies as she loved flowers. My father will be joining me on sets tomorrow as well and I hope to have him join me in the celebrations. I’m very pleased that 2017 is shaping up really well for me.”

Popular for her films like Bhumika, Chakra, Arth, Mirch Masala, Namak Halaal and many others, Smita was born in Pune. Her father was a politician and a social worker. Smita imbibed these qualities of her father. She made a place for herself in the male-dominated showbiz only on the basis of her talent. An extremely down to earth person and a dedicated professional, Smita’s onscreen avatars reflected her true self on silver screen.

“I had no idea. I had simply liked the place when I was on a recce there. It was the locals who recently told me about these iconic films being shot there. I must have been 12-13 when Shyam Babu was shooting Junoon there with Naseerbhai. This place houses the history of cinema,” exults Anubhav who flagged off the film on his son, Shlok’s birthday.

He’s all praise for the mango belt of North India and its gracious inhabitants. “The mango orchards spread over miles and the locals actually adhere to the Lucknavi tehzeeb of ‘pehle aap, pehjle aap’.
